Why are elements of different color flames burn?

I was experimenting and flames are the colors, so green, pink, white, and I wondered if the different properties cause this or do something else?

Lorette, Great question. It appears that colors are due to different types of atoms emit light of different wavelengths when electrons in atoms move. This how it works: an atom of a particular element has multiple electronic layers and each layer has a different energy. When atoms are heated, some electrons can jump to the deposits of higher energy, but do not stay long. When the electrons fall back to a shell low energy, emitting energy as a photon (particle, "" light). The energy of photons emitted is energy difference between the two shells, which determines the wavelength of light. Because different elements have shells different energies, the atoms emit photons unique colors by the energies of different shells. Sodium levels energy electrons emit photons of yellow, strontium energy levels of electrons that emit red photons, and so on.
